‘In the touching production #uncut Renske Vrolijk lets her inner struggle echo in music.’

Identity is a Collision
In #uncut, Renske Vrolijk dismantles the chronological ‘before and after’ narrative of gender transition. Identity is not a straight line; it is a polyphonic collision. The child, the adolescent, and the adult exist simultaneously in a state of permanent friction.
Three Voices, One Body
The work splits the protagonist, Vivian, into three distinct vocal timbres:
- The Adult (Mezzo-Soprano): The survivor. She is tasked with the hard labour of harmonising these disparate timelines into a single identity.
- The Child (Soprano): The memory of the unbroken voice. A state of innocence before biology intervened.
- The Adolescent (Tenor): The embodiment of puberty. He captures the trauma of the vocal ‘break’—the sound of biological betrayal.
The Public Gaze
The choir functions as the outside world—an intrusive, relentless feed of questions. They do not offer moral commentary; they demand answers. ‘Are you happy now?’ ‘What surgeries did you have?’ They represent the exhaustion of existing under the public gaze.
The Sound
The instrumental texture provides the physical weight. A heavy floor of saxophones, bassoon, and double bass represents the gravity of the body that the voices must escape. A Hammond organ adds a layer of gritty, industrial persistence to the struggle.
