People are protesting on Dam Square in Amsterdam because they are favouring a fairer distribution of wealth. Therefore, this man sells the newspaper De Socialist. Also, someone is holding up a protest sign behind him with the text: “Tax the rich”.

By visibly expressing themselves this way, they take a stand against the neo-liberal free market tide. These people speak out for a narrower divide between rich and poor, so that more people can have a better life.

Their argument is that if prosperity is better distributed, more people earn a fair living through honest work. And if prosperity is better distributed, as a result fewer people run the risk of becoming homeless and having to sleep on the street, like this young woman and this ragged man.
